I have a [new] USB3 external HD. Plugging in the HD while the system is running results in an immediate reboot; the drive seems to work, so long as it is present while the system is booting.

I have tested the drive on a single laptop, but two different distros (one is Ubuntu), with two different kernels. I tried reformatting from NTFS to EXT4, but the issue persists.

I had a similar issue with another drive (from another vendor). I thought perhaps that one was defective, but seeing the behavior of the new drive makes me think otherwise.

Is this a common problem? It seems like a driver issue, but I haven't found any other reports involving a sudden reboot.
