I just installed Windows XP and Windows 98 on VirtualBox 3.2.12 r68302, which the VB is installed on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bits, 4GB of RAM and 2GHz of processor.

Setting are as below:

Windows XP:

  • Memory assigned: 768MB,

  • Display memory: 64MB,

  • Hard disk: 10GB (dynamic, the default),

  • Processors: 2,

  • Motherboard Extended features: Enabled IO APIC,

  • Processor Extended features: Enable PAE/NX,

  • Acceleration Hardware Virtualization: Enabled VT-x/AMD-V, Enabled Nested Paging.

Windows 98 SE:

  • Memory assigned: 768MB,

  • Display memory: 64MB,

  • Hard disk: 10GB (dynamic, the default),

  • Processor: 1,

  • Motherboard Extended features: Disabled IO APIC,

  • Processor Extended features: Disabled PAE/NX,

  • Acceleration Hardware Virtualization: Disabled VT-x/AMD-V, Disabled Nested Paging.

Quite long ago in 2009 to 2011, I used to use VirtualBox since version 1.9 to 2.1, installed the same Windows XP and Windows 98, and also Ubuntu Linux, and there were never any problem. Mean, I am not new to VirtualBox. That VB was installed in the same Windows Vista and the laptop that I have right now.

Then my question is, what is the problem so now my two Windows are very slow on this VirtualBox? That VirtualBox I downloaded it from it official website.

Additional info:
At their time, I used to use Windows 98 SE with 100MHz processor and 16MB of RAM (and then 32MB), and it worked quite smooth. So did Windows XP with 1,5GHz processor and 256 of RAM (then 512MB), and it worked fine, smooth.

  • What's the make of the host's processor? That way we can confirm if Nested Paging and VT-x are supported and available. And another thing: If your processor lacks support for Invalidate Process-Context Identifier (INVPCID)instructions, you're not going to get much in performance in your scenario.
