I am used to using laptops which have an HDMI port with my old monitor which only has a VGA port. I then have an HDMI-to-VGA cable I use to plug my laptop into the monitor, and this has always worked fine.

However, I have one laptop which has no HDMI port but only regular USB 3.0 ports. There are various "USB to VGA" adapters on the internet. Would such an adapter suffice to allow this laptop to connect to an external monitor? If so, what's the point of laptops have a specialized HDMI port?
