I used to have a neat set up where I had a folder "C:shortcuts" where I put .lnk shortcuts of my frequently used programs. I then did something to the "c:shortcuts" folder that allowed me to open any shortcut in that directory from anywhere in cmd prompt without having to navigate to it. For instance I could type "word", and that would invoke "c:shortcutsword.lnk" without having to navigate to "c:shortcuts". I read an article about five years ago showing how to set this up, but I can't seem to relocate it.
