I just happen to run across a problem… The problem of saving old hard drives and watching them pile up and not using them, I have gone ahead and tested almost all of them; and they are all circa 2009 to 2011 IDE and SATA HDD's and haven't been turned on in years but all working properly.
Now here's the hundred dollar question, has anyone benchmarked the speeds of using an IDE hard drive dedicated Ubuntu Server just for the sake of it? or even just for an 'at home' server? I was thinking using RAID, but what has stopped me has been thinking of the loading speeds and figured I'd ask if anyone has already been through this venture before I jump on it and spend hours just tweaking with settings and adjustments to figure out if it's even worth the time.
I figure that if the server is just handling 20 meg size websites or even personal data on a shared network, that given the upload speeds of an 'at home' internet provider service (which is less than 1 meg/s) the IDE hard drives would not be that much of a problem? what are you thoughts?

I guess the big question is how important your data is. Older drives could fail - and the speed of a drive could vary wildly depending on the specifications (speed, cache) and condition of the drive. Do you really want to trust a decade old dusty drive with your data?

I will constantly be overlooking what will be on the drives, hence have backup plan already set up for this.
