I have a laptop with tpm and bitlocker support.
I am trying to set up a simple password on startup by bitlocker just like veracrypt, though when I try to set bitlocker all I see is this:
enter image description here

There is no password option even when I move forward in the setup - only "Save to a file".
am I supposed to memorize the key on that file or what? why can't I just set a password?

  • That's the recovery key, they key is used for emergency for when you forget the password. This should be saved in cold-storage or in a different location. This is not the 'password' for unlocking the disk on a daily basis.

Since you have TPM you can achieve this, but only with the CLI, not by using the wizard like your screenshot, the command you're looking for is:

manage-bde -on <drive letter>

As explained in Bitlocker basic deployment - Operating system Volume:

... In general, using only the manage-bde -on <drive letter> command will encrypt the operating system volume with a TPM-only protector and no recovery key. ...

  • thanks. i am rethinking my steps here though: manage-bde -on C: 123123 - is that a correct format for a pass?

  • I feel like this answer is telling the OP how to specifically ask for the lack of protection that Microsoft is giving by default. The OP asked how to do encryption with a protector that included a simple password, not TPM only.
