My HP laptop has a broken screen that used to display despite being damaged. Recently, it stopped working altogether.

I have an external HP 2009m monitor. It didn't work when initially plugged in and powered on with the laptop. So I looked on YouTube and found a solution in a video that looked like it would work. I removed the built-in display and carefully unplugged the ribbon (I'm confident no damage occurred). Now with the built-in display removed and the external laptop plugged in, the latter is still not working.

I have the monitor hooked up with the VGI plugged into that and the HDMI plugged into that port on the laptop.

At this point, the external monitor just sleeps right away on boot. Most recently, I've tried Fn+F8 scrolling and entering my password (this technique taken from another YT video) since I'm not sure if the laptop is in sleep mode or any other state. It's also worth noting that when I boot the laptop, the Caps Lock light blinks on & off about every 4 seconds.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated as I'm not that technical.
