Good day!
Whenever I save an excel file, this error message always appears:
- Your changes could not be saved to "xxxx.xlsm" due to a sharing violation. Try saving to a different file.
I've tried doing the following things below but the error still exists:
- Reinstall Microsoft Excel
- Disable antivirus while saving file
- Move contents of existing file to a fresh excel file
- Unchecked folder indexing under Folder properties > advanced
- Did a system restore (But the error returned a few days after)
Do you guys know any solution to this problem? I've been experiencing this error for almost 3 weeks and still can't find any solution.
Your help is much appreciated!
Other information:
Using Windows 7 64bit
Antivirus = Avast
Using Microsoft Excel 2010
windows-7 microsoft-excel microsoft-excel-2010 anti-virus

From my readings, it seems that it is due to the antivirus. Do you have Windows Defender activated, on top of Avast? There's a good explanation in the 2 comments here, as well as possible solutions.

I checked my list of programs and noticed that a program called Bytefence (anti-malware) program was installed on my computer last week. I don't know how it got there but I uninstalled it and I'm no longer experiencing the problem. Thank you!

The prime reason for the Error you are getting,"Your changes could not be saved to "xxxx.xlsm" due to a sharing violation"is:
The file you are handling, ‘XXXX.xlsm’, is in different format than specified by the file extension. This error is being caused by a bug in the Excel Shell Extension msoshext.dll and applies to MS Office SP1 and SP2.
The solution I can suggest you is, apply Hotfix.
You may follow these steps:
- Close all Microsoft Office products including Excel.
- Download the Hotfix from,
http://www.proposedsolution.com/downloads/download-officekb982125fullfilex86glbexe/
- Install the Hotfix and follow the instructions.
- Finally restart the Windows.
I would be very careful before downloading a so-called hotfix, written by an unknown person that is not affiliated to Microsoft, and shared on some random website in 2010...

@RajeshS how can you know it's not harmful? Have you downloaded and tested the file yourself? Having an antivirus should not replace caution, IMO, especially given the circumstances (2010 post, unofficial website). Besides, you say it's a bug, but what are your sources? With a simple Google search, you'll see that most of the people who mentioned this problem said it's due to an antivirus (or similar software) blocking .xlsm files, because they can be potentially dangerous.

From my readings, it seems that it is due to the antivirus. Do you have Windows Defender activated, on top of Avast? There's a good explanation in the 2 comments here, as well as possible solutions.
